The ICCP examinations are norm referenced examinations, that means each examination's "degree of difficulty" is adjusted based on the performance of a "professional sample" group - that is, the target audience. This is done through a process of releasing beta examinations to the appropriate professional association, academics and employees in industry, then adjusting the scores and difficulties of the questions to the sample group performance and verifying this data every few years. Each test item on any examination is assessed based on how well it is correlated in distinguishing expert peformers, that is those who achieve 70% or higher on the exam.
