The ACP is intended for recent entrants into the IT field.  Many people enter the IT field with varied education and experience.  Companies take employees with aptitude for various elements of IT and promote them into IT operations for various reasons, sometimes due to efforts in enterprise resources planning, other times through the help desk and general computer services support and this results in indviduals not always being broadly trained in IT related knowledge and skills.

Those individuals perform valuable work but need some way to assess their knowledge, where they may be weak and what kind of training to take to fill in the gaps.  The ACP was developed for these specific purposes.

It is also ideal for those people who do not possess an IT degree or formal undergraduate education in the computing science or information science.   The ACP program is annually benchmarked by some 700 of the top graduating students in the USA from over 92 universities.  So while it is a challenging exam, it does benchmark your skills against the best in the world.  Since 90% of those 700 students competing at the national computer competitions perform between 50%-69% on the examination the ACP passing standard was established at 50% or higher for each ICCP examination.

Thus the ACP is awarded when a person passes two examinations:  The Information Systems CORE Examination, plus one (1) other ICCP examination (language or specialty) at the 50% or higher passing score.  For a complete list of examinations reference the Examination section of this website.
